Steve Slimm was born in the Midlands in 1953 and grew up in the
Cotswolds. He moved to Cornwall over thirty years ago and
regards it very much as his home. From
the cliffs of North Cornwall to the moors of West Penwith, he loves to explore the coastal footpaths and network of tiny
roads. "I work almost entirely from the land around me and my
interpretations are taking on a richer and more personal meaning. Through the
years the main inspiration for my work has been the Cornish landscape, with its
ever changing mood and light." He
often paints large acrylics on canvas, many of which are very dramatic and
verge on abstraction. The horizon can
still be distinguished as the place where land and sky meet, however the
remainder is left to the viewer's imagination.
Layers of colour illuminate the paintings but the emphasis is on
brushstroke and gesture showing his love of the Cornish landscape. His
paintings distinctively breathe the atmosphere of Cornwall's coast and skyline.
Without formal art school training, although he did study under John Miller for
a period, Steve's career has developed
over the last 20 years, from his early traditional watercolours and oils, through
a variety of experimental, expressive styles to now being one of the most
promising and exciting contemporary landscape painters in Penwith. He has exhibited widely, including several
solo and two person shows.
